About Course
The levels of intelligent driving are usually defined by the SAE International, which categorizes autonomous driving systems into six levels from 0 to 5. Here is a brief description of each level:
* SAE Level 0 – No Automation:
The vehicle is fully controlled by the human driver, with no automated systems intervening in the driving task.
* SAE Level 1 – Driver Assistance:
The vehicle has a single automated assist function, such as Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) or Lane Keeping Assist (LKA). The driver must maintain full control and monitoring of the vehicle at all times.
* SAE Level 2 – Partial Automation:
The vehicle has systems that automate at least two primary driving tasks (like steering and acceleration/braking) simultaneously, such as Tesla’s Autopilot. The driver needs to monitor the system’s operation and be ready to take over at any time.
* SAE Level 3 – Conditional Automation:
The vehicle can perform all driving tasks in specific environments and conditions, without the need for driver monitoring, but the driver must take over when requested by the system.
* SAE level 4 – High Automation: The vehicle can achieve full autonomous driving within certain geographic areas, without any driver intervention. This level of autonomy might first be realized in specific scenarios, such as fixed-route public transportation or autonomous taxis.
* SAE Level 5 – Full Automation: The vehicle can achieve full autonomous driving in all environments and conditions, without any driver intervention. This is the ultimate goal of autonomous driving technology, meaning the vehicle can drive autonomously on any road and under any conditions.
